HSP Maintenance Agreement

The cost of maintaining hearing devices can add up. A maintenance agreement is an easy and cost-effective way to help keep your hearing device in good working condition. During the 12-month agreement, your provider will supply you with batteries and other consumables and service and repair your hearing device. This can include:

  • Repairs or replacement of necessary parts

  • Cleaning your hearing aid

  • Replacing the thin tube, dome, wax guards, microphone or ear hook

Maintenance agreements are optional. If you choose to enter into a maintenance agreement, the program provides your provider with a subsidy, and you may be required to pay an annual fee.Maintenance agreements do not cover device accessories, such as rechargers or remote controls. Maintenance agreements are not automatically renewed. After 12 months, your provider must obtain your agreement before renewing the maintenance agreement.

Veteran Gold card or Veteran White card (specific for hearing loss) holders with fully subsidised devices are exempt from paying the annual fee (this is paid by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA)). DVA clients with partially subsidised devices must pay any difference between the government maintenance subsidy and the fee quoted for their device/s. DVA clients must still agree to enter into a maintenance agreement by completing the maintenance form.

Further information about maintenance agreements is available at health.gov.au/hear.

Hearing Aid Maintenance Tips

Replacing Standard Batteries

Modern hearing aids rely on the correct type of battery to work effectively. Always use batteries specifically designed for hearing aids.

Battery life varies depending on the type of hearing aid, how often it is worn, and the battery size. Standard batteries typically need to be replaced every one to two weeks. It is therefore a good idea to keep a supply of spare batteries at home and take extras with you when travelling.

Rechargeable Batteries

Many modern hearing aids are also available with rechargeable batteries. Once fully charged, these can provide up to 24 hours of use, depending on the device and how it is used.

Keep hearing aids and batteries out of reach of children and pets.

  • Keep your hearing aid clean and dry. Avoid getting it wet, and remove it before showering or swimming.

  • Clean the hearing aid every day with a soft, dry cloth.

  • Gently remove earwax or debris from the earpiece, dome, or sound outlet using the cleaning tools provided.

  • Do not use water, alcohol, disinfectant, or household cleaning products unless the manufacturer specifically recommends them.

  • Keep the microphone openings clear so sound is not blocked.

  • If your hearing aid uses disposable batteries, check and replace them when needed. Keep spare batteries dry and safely stored.

  • If it is rechargeable, place it in the charger when you are not using it.

  • Store the hearing aid in its protective case when not being worn.

  • Keep it away from heat, moisture, hairspray, perfume, and cosmetics.

  • If the hearing aid becomes wet, remove the battery if possible, dry the outside gently, and follow the manufacturer's drying instructions.

  • Arrange a check with your hearing-care professional if the hearing aid becomes weak, distorted, stops working, or continues to collect wax.
